The heirs of the famous Spanish artist are now riding the wave of non-fungible tokens: virtual pieces based on his hand-painted ceramic vase
Picasso debuts in cryptoart. The heirs of the famous Spanish artist are auctioning over a thousand virtual pieces of art based on his ceramic work, a bowl from 1958, never exhibited to the public. Art (and blockchain) enthusiasts can now purchase these NFTs, non-fungible tokens, digital certificates of authenticity that can be attached to any virtual object.
We are trying to build a bridge between the NFT world and that of the fine arts, explained niece Marina Picasso in an interview with the Associated Press. In his Geneva apartment – where he lives with his son Florian Picasso, a DJ and music producer – lheir exhibited a small portion of the relic in question, roughly the size of a salad bowl. a work that represents a face, and very expressive, he said. joyful, cheerful. A PThe first online sales phase begins on Friday through the Nifty Gateway and Origin Protocol platforms. Obviously, buyers will not own Picasso’s ceramics or the rights to the images that portray it: they will purchase limited digital copies that the heirs of the great painter and sculptor hope will acquire full value as has already happened in other cases. After all, the NFTs have already made millions of dollars to much less well-known artists. Last March, a digital collage by a South Carolina artist known as Beeple sold for $ 69 million, the third highest price ever for a work by a living artist. NFTs also allow digital creators to collect royalties whenever a work of art changes hands.
Marina Picasso and her son Florian are trying to exploit the wave of interest in this phenomenon. She is the daughter of Paulo Picasso, the artist’s eldest son, the only one he had with his first wife, the Russian ballerina Olga Khokhlova. After Pablo’s death in 1973, without a will, Marina inherited a fifth of his estate, including around 10,000 works of art. He has since sold part of it, including many pottery.
In an interview with the Guardian in 2015, the woman described her relationship with her famous grandfather as troubled. It was a man who drove everyone around him to despair. We have had a very hard life, living close to misery he said when he decided to get rid of seven works of the Grand pre. Marina Picasso has now decided to auction the physical ceramic piece too: it will be auctioned at Sotheby’s in March.
Part of the proceeds from the sale of NFT will go to charity: it will go to a body that aims to address the shortage of nurses and to a non-profit organization that works to reduce carbon in the atmosphere.
NFT will arrive with music composed by Florian Picasso, songwriter John Legend and rapper Nas. Florian Picasso played a preview excerpt and then turned it off. To find out more, you have to buy NFT, he joked.
